Why do the results and reference values for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (IgG Spike protein) differ from one laboratory to the other?

The tests for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies are harmonized according to the international standard 20/136 of the WHO, but not calibrated. The measured antibody concentration as well as the reference value are therefore different for the same unit BAU/mL (Binding Antibody Units) depending on the test used and thus from laboratory to laboratory.

To review the immune status over time, the measurement should always be done with the same test.

A COVID-19 certificate of recovery can be issued after a conclusive positive antibody detection for SARS-CoV-2. For Viollier, this is the case when the result of an antibody test ‘SARS-CoV-2 IgG qn Spike‘ is > 28 BAU/mL.
