The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes the lung disease COVID-19, is spreading since December 2019. In addition to its country of origin, China, other countries are also reporting infections.

At the Viollier AG’s outpatient clinics, diagnostic testing is not carried out due to the infection prevention measures recommended by the Federal Office of Public Health.

Case definition

A suspected case meets the current case definition criteria of the World Health Organization with:

  • acute respiratory disease AND fever*

  • PLUS: Travel or residence in an affected area (China) within the last 14 days
  • OR close contact to a laboratory confirmed case

* Fever may be absent in some cases   

Reporting obligation

All physicians must report any suspected infection with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 to the respective cantonal medical office by telephone within 2 hours.

Diagnostics

The cantonal doctor determines if diagnostic testing is indicated. The virus is detected by PCR from swabs of the respiratory tract at the National Reference Laboratory for emerging viral diseases in Geneva.
